Synopsis:
“The Designer is Dead” intricately weaves the story of Miguel Adrover, a once-celebrated designer in New York’s fashion scene during the early 2000s, that today lives in isolation in Rural Mallorca. Recognized by The New York Times as the new hope of American fashion, Adrover broke gender and racial barriers, celebrating multiculturalism through his diverse collections and casting. He also pioneered sustainable design, championing recycling long before it became a mainstream concern. As the film captures Adrover’s meteoric rise and the sharp decline that followed—his exit from the limelight and years spent in obscurity—it offers an intimate look at his ongoing efforts to heal from the past by rediscovering his creative voice as a photographer. Through candid conversations with Adrover, insights from close collaborators, and commentary from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Robin Givhan, “The Designer is Dead” explores the intricacies of reinvention, posing questions about the meaning of success, identity, artistry, and the resilience required in the pursuit of a second act.
